Assignment 1 - Photo Manipulation
The transformation of the original picture into a memory will change the effect and the perception of time, creating a visual of a woman that lived in the past. First step was to adjust the saturation, diminishing the bright colour into a light-coloured tone. This effect will create a transparent colour diminishing the power of her red dress and her blue hat. I also removed the shadows to brighten the image, extending the sharpness by giving clear texture to her clothing. The exposure is slightly raised to adjust the overall lightness of the image. I increased the highlights details by darkening the shadow of her face, which appears dark and sunburned. Lastly, I faded the colour, added yellow tint and edge blurred the image, which expresses the imagination of a dream or a lost memory. The edited image will misguide the audience if they can't see the original, because the circumstances where this picture was shot is unknown or unclear and appears to be an old picture of a woman who is doing hand work. Because of her clothes, the work she is doing, and things that surround her, the audience will believe that this picture is old, although, the image is just a mimic of past history. |
This picture was shot at my grandmother's memory when she used to create work with her hands that no one else could create so beautifully.
This picture was shot at the Black Creek Pioneer Village in Toronto, in a house of farmers where they have created moments of history when women main duties was to raise children, farming and hand work; like in this picture where this woman's work is hand spinning wool. The creation of an image that I have in my memory is identical to this picture that I shot thinking of my childhood spend with "my baba". The difference between this image and my memory is that my memory is only parts which are still unclear. The moment described in this picture are close to the image of "my baba" and past moments of her delicate work.
The change of the next panoramic creates a view of an unreal world where the imagination of the audience can rich numerous ideas on how this image came along and its history.
The purpose of editing this image is to create a new, but similar concept of a house in the middle of the nature.
First editing tool is the effect "engraving", which changes the impression of the original picture in the mind of the audience. This effect is unclear but demonstrates skilful technique on how all the lines and texture takes a different format and exposure of light. I also maximized the contrast and saturation, and brightened the colours to keep the green "alive". With the temperature of the colour changed, it is brought into the image a friendly movement of a warm yellow, across the trees and grass as well as across the house.
One last adjustment was to add edge blur which "consumes" the image and gradually disappears.
This picture will confuse the audience if they can't see the original because it looks more like a painting or a drawing instead of an image of a house in the nature. The idea of editing this image was to misguide the audience and invent a new approach of imagination.
The unknown path of this picture, the design of the house, how old it is, and the culture of origin, can as well create confusion and misinterpretation of the edited image.
This picture is a view of a 200 years old house that is well maintained and kept in the Natural Park Museum of Village Houses in Northern Romania. This house represents the architecture of an old house style that wealthier people used to build themselves for their families. I would also like to mention that in the past, like in this home, parents were sharing their little room with five to nine children. My grandparents used to live in a similar house ninety years ago.
The last image edited is an image of a red tulip with the sun and a blue sky as background. I chose to edit this image because I want to use a different font by changing the aspect into a dramatic but warm colour.
The changes made are simple but carefully adjusted to give the tulip glow.
First adjustments are the effects "sepia" and "contrast". I raise the level of the contrast to 100% to enhance the clarity of the colour. The next step was to bring the definition to 100%, which improves the appearance and gives the flower a glamorous and shiny shade. The background is also changed and the light blue is now transformed into many nuances of brown.
I believe that this edited image of a tulip flower can misguide the audience if they don't see the original by just guessing the original colour of this flower.
Originals are always important to figure the source of an edited image.
Nowadays, with all the technology and sources to edit images, is easy to confuse and misguide the audience and question how the original might look like. Moreover, the art of manipulation requires skills and attention to detail which focuses not only to the appearance of an image but also to its originality.
